WHERE IT STARTED

The concept of MESH Education was founded by Managing Director, Elyse Phelps, as a result of first-hand experience in the field, and in the classroom.

“When delivering training to industrial healthcare providers, I consistently received the same requests from the learners…“yes we need to refresh CPR during our annual professional development, but can you show me how to perform an abdominal assessment? What’s the difference between these three types of anti-emetic medications? How do I talk to someone in a mental health crisis?”…

“…there was a gap between the education attained from the qualification, and the actual skills and knowledge required to perform the role”.

About MESH Education Elyse Phelps

UNDERSTANDING THE NEED FOR SPECIALISED TRAINING

The resources industry employees over 248,000 employees and continues to grow annually. Businesses in regional, offshore or remote locations have additional complexities to consider when electing their healthcare services due to the high-risk nature of their operations, in addition to geographical isolation.

The availability of emergency services and paramedical response is paramount. Healthcare workers in the field generally hold vocational or tertiary qualifications for the role; training with a focus predominantly on emergency medical conditions, trauma and cardiac arrest. Yet, the majority of patient presentations are employees seeking assessment and treatment of common ailments.

Employees work long hours for weeks or even months at a time, without the usual access to clinics, pharmacies and allied healthcare services that would ordinarily be utilised in a metropolitan setting. Thus, the role of the industrial healthcare worker has evolved to a multi-disciplinary position, including emergency response, primary healthcare, safety related duties and volunteer training.

How do we prepare emergency trained healthcare professionals for the complexity of this role?

The foundation of MESH Education was inspired by this reality, with a vision to set industrial healthcare professionals up for success in their field. To build confidence, develop existing skills and knowledge, and ultimately achieve good patient outcomes.
